South Central in Brighton, England?

South Central Golden Dawn

What is the hood like in Brighton, England?  I’ve never been there, so for all I know, it could be the UK’s version of Compton, but everytime I think of the getto in England (outside of London), I can’t help but think of Ali G from the West Stanes Massive. Respekt!  Getting back on topic, South Central have been residents of the blog world for quite some time now, and still have yet to put out anything more than an EP.  Many consider them to be amongst the ranks of the modern era nu-rave/electro elite along with Justice, Cut Copy, Kitsune’s all-stars, etc. and I am really starting to agree with that assessment.  I remember reading an interview with the guys a year or so back, in which they said they didn’t forsee ever really putting out an LP, mostly because they are viewed by many as a dance act, and dance acts don’t put out LPs.  Well, lucky for all of us, it looks like they will be eating their words, since its rumored that they will be putting out an all original full-length release sometime in 2009!!  As much as it can be a blessing for a band and a curse for fans, i really hope this LP gets them the mainstream recognition that they deserve.

From what I heard these guys are like a modern day Aphex Twin (although probably less insane) building their own compressors, EQ’s and other hardware from scratch.  Respekt!

Here is my favorite original by the guys, “Golden Dawn“. I thought their earlier originals were good, but this totally opened my eyes up to what they were actually capable of.

Check out the video for “Golden Dawn“:

Now “Golden Dawn” is great, but what really put South Central on the map in the first place was their sick remixing abilities, and if you haven’t caught a DJ set by the guys yet, you are missing out.  Here is my favorite remix of theirs, a re-cut of “Searching Flesh” by Dandi Wind

Dandi Wind - Searching Flesh (South Central Remix)

Speaking of Dandi Wind, from Vancouver, Canada, here is another remix of their track ”Adolescent” by my NYC neighboor Nick Catchdubs out of Brooklyn, NY.

***BONUS***

Alright, I couldn’t end the post without adding this: Instalment # 24 of the No Love Lost Records mixtape series by South Central.  Probably one of the best sets I have heard yet, and unlike alot of other producers out there, didn’t just load it up with their own tracks.  Totally worth the 87mbs.
