NRK
This post marks two milestones for jacuzzikillers.com. First off, after getting these killer tracks from NRK (formerly New Rave Kids On The Block), I decided it was about time to give Brazil its own catagory on the site. We’ve already posted great stuff by CSS, Database, and The Twelves; now with NRK and tracks coming from Bo$$ In Drama, Midnight Martyn of Database, and others, I think it was only right that this breeding ground for fun original music get its due recognition. Second, this will be the first of many short interviews with artists that we think you should know more about. We kept it short, because we know you all (including ourselves) have the attention span of a coked up chihuahuas. Check the new “Interview” catagory regularly for more.
Ok, so to be quite honest, NRK doesn’t produce meaningful soul-searching music that will help you coax a beej out of that bangable uptight intellectual you’ve had your eye on in your English Lit class. Actually, they couldn’t be farther from that, which is exactly why we love them! In a world where most artists act as if their music is the single most important peice of art since Van Gogh painted ugly Dutch peasants, its nice to NRK not take themselves so seriously, and just have fun making the perfect party music. Light-hearted lyrics (”a monkey pulled my hair”), killer bass lines, and a steady 4/4 beat with an 80’s flair…put this into your DJ sets asap!

Check out this remix of “Flashlight Monkey” by the Spanish boy/girl duo, Cof Cof:

…and finally, NRK’s rework of the UK’s post-punk legends The Fall’s track “Couldn’t Get Ahead“:

JK: So guys NRK, formerly New Rave Kids On The Block…how did you come up with this name?
NRK: Raphael and Cello were drunk one night and came up with the name. It was supposed to be funny, they weren’t serious, neither was the “project” - we never knew it would turn up to be this big!
JK: So how did you guys meet & start making music together as NRK?
NRK: We met at a night club. At first, it was supposed to be a DJ duo. When Goos joined the project, we thought it would be cool to create our own tracks and play them for our friends. That’s when our track “Vivian The Whore Next Door” was born, in October 2007.
JK: Everyone has their own influences, who or what artists influence you and inspire you to make music?
NRK: We came from different backgrounds. Raphael is Brit (The Fall, Smiths), Cello is alternative rock (Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine) and Goos is party/new wave (B-52s, Blondie, Run DMC).
JK: Where do you guys see yourselves and your music say…2 years from now?
NRK: Hopefully on a world tour, with our 2nd album!
JK: Ok, so you guys are the headliners on a world-tour, sold out shows, what is your dream line-up of 4 other artists you could pick to support you?
NRK: Check our myspace, I think they are all there! (note: NRK’s top 4 friends are The Go! Team, Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, CSS, & The B-52’s…so there you go, you can’t change it now!)
JK: To wrap things up, I’ll ask you a few random short questions:
If you could be anything other than a musician, what would you be? A Robot!
What 1 thing couldn’t you live without? Google
What pisses you off the most? People who double click hyperlinks.
Thanks NRK for talking with us, and all of you, if you made it this far you owe it to them to pick up their new EP titled Radical!
